Giving Opportunities
Enhancing the UC San Diego School of Medicine’s tradition of excellence is key to carrying out its vision as a premiere academic medical institution. Preparing the next generation of physicians and pioneering new medical advancements keeps the school at the forefront of today’s medical science.
Heavy competition to attract the most promising students, along with increased tuition costs, amplify our medical school’s reliance on the support of alumni and friends. Your gift is an investment in the potential to transform the future of health care.
Options for supporting the School of Medicine include:
- Medical Student Scholarships
The UCSD School of Medicine prepares the physicians of tomorrow to serve diverse communities in medical practice settings. Yet, as the average debt of medical students grows toward $100,000, scholarships are urgently needed.Medical school scholarships and fellowships not only strengthen our school by ensuring that we can continue to recruit the most capable and intelligent students, but also help us retain current students who require continued financial assistance. To respond to the rise in education costs, the School of Medicine launched the Medical Scholarship Initiative, supporting our students by providing immediate, need-based scholarships.
Support for expanding our Medical Scientist Training Program, where trainees earn both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees, is also critical to advancing novel ideas into research and practice. Most students will complete a dual-degree program in eight years, and it is our goal to offer trainees full scholarship support for the duration of the program.
Alumni of the School of Medicine can also provide scholarship support through class campaigns. A minimum pooled gift of $50,000, composed of pledges and contributions, creates an endowment that funds a scholarship in perpetuity. The scholarship is named in honor of the class that established the fund.
- Endowed Chairs
An endowed chair supports UC San Diego’s faculty excellence by attracting and retaining innovators of all kinds. Your endowment creates a perpetual fund that provides an annual income to support the research and teaching efforts of exceptional faculty members in the School of Medicine.Endowed funds forever connect the name of the donor—or someone the donor wishes to honor—with UC San Diego’s School of Medicine and with the important cause they support.
- New Medical Education and Telemedicine Facilities
The UC San Diego School of Medicine has embarked on a new initiative to build a state-of-the-art, next-generation medical education and telemedicine facility that serves its medical students and the San Diego community and beyond. We must raise $23.7 million in private support to leverage with $35 million in state bond funds to make the new Medical Education and Telemedicine Building a reality. In the new facilities, medical and pharmacy students will learn the latest research, technical and diagnostic techniques. Telemedicine, a rapidly developing field of clinical medicine requiring advanced resources, directs the transmission of medical information for consultation and medical procedures done remotely. By leading the emerging art and science of telemedicine, the Medical Education and Telemedicine Building will help improve health care for populations throughout the nation and the world, including those currently underserved.
Making a major gift, such as naming a room in a new building or creating an endowed scholarship fund, is easier and more affordable than you think.
